Hi everyone!
I haven't posted for awhile, but, I have been cruising through now and then and I have a question. I have been hearing a lot about MSG and how it is in every kind of processed food you could imagine and also how it goes under different names, such as, natural flavorings, soy products and hydrolized yeast, etc. Which brings me to nutritional yeast that is sometimes mentioned in our raw foods recipies. Is this the same as hydrolized yeast or protien? and also, how about the Amino Acid and the Noma soy, I think I spelled it right. What makes these items different than MSG?:(
Thanks,
dreamspinner

Suggestion: have you tried a little research - like with Google? It's good to take a bit of time looking yourself before asking questions - that way you can contribute something and ask more informed questions.:)
Nutritional yeast is pasteurized, so it is in effect 'cooked', making its nutrients non-available to the body, lol
Strange post. I am kinda shocked, really. I am not sure that was the question Don. Regardless if NY is cooked, she is inquiring about the MSG, right dream? Plus, I was under the assumption that we had the freedom to ask questions and learn in this forum. For a new poster & new raw fooder, like dream, with only about 5 posts under her belt, comments like that might make her, and others shy away from asking questions. I know I am a frequent poster and now am wondering if I am asking less informed questions?

This is controversial, depending on who you are asking. It is not Black and White, as a Google Search will show you. I am in the section of people who believes yes, it all contains MSG. (remember, others do disagree...) We have a thread on MSG here (http://www.rawfreedomcommunity.info/forum/showthread.php?t=1176&highlight=hidden+msg). No one mentions these items by name, however this was the original post:
Foods always contain MSG when these words are on the label:
MSG
Monosodium glutamate
Monopotassium glutamate
Glutamate
Glutamic Acid
Gelatin
Hydrolyzed Vegetable Protein (HVP)
Hydrolyzed Plant Protein (HPP)
Autolyzed Plant Protein
Sodium Caseinate
Calcium Caseinate
Textured Protein
Yeast Extract
Yeast food or nutrient
Autolyzed Yeast
So yes, Nutritional Yeast Contains MSG. You can read somemore about it here (http://www.truthinlabeling.org/organicP.html). From Newstarget here (http://www.newstarget.com/020426.html). At Mercola here (http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2007/08/28/dangers-of-msg.aspx) .
Braggs Amino Acid : There is quite a controversy over wether it does or not. You can read more about it at We Like It Raw here (http://www.welikeitraw.com/rawfood/2005/06/bragg_liquid_am.html).
And Nama Shoyu -- It may contain MSG. You can read some about it here (http://www.sciencefriday.com/blog/index.php?/archives/177-Industrial-Food-Parts-One,-Two-and-Three.html). And Here (http://www.sunfiredlife.com/raw-status-of-foods.html). And here (http://sheseescolor.blogspot.com/2007/05/kidney-cleanse-check.html). And Raw Food Talk has a nice thread on it here (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=22717) & here (http://www.rawfoodtalk.com/showthread.php?t=2391).
There is also an MSG discussion board here (http://www.msgmyth.com/discus/messages/board-topics.html).
Hope this helps Dream!

:o I hate it when I mess up!
Quote: Regardless if NY is cooked, she is inquiring about the MSG, right dream?
RVM: Thanks for being so kind. And yes, you did answer my question. From now on I will consider ny, nama shoyu and BAA equal to MSG. The reason being is because I have used these and have noticed that it really makes my appetite for these foods increase and I feel kind of yuck and I swell with water retention. That is why I started wondering and searching and reading but, still found it confusing. Thanks so much again.
DON: Yes, I did do research and most of what I read was really confusing for me. It's just they had all these different wordings for different things making it sound as though it was the same thing but different. That's why I decided to ask the masters of raw food. Sorry, if I came across badly. I will try and be a little more careful in the future.
I truly enjoy all that you do for us newbies or wannabies on this site.:o
Thanks again,

I came to this thread to read more about Nutrional Yeast *because I love the taste of it* and thank you Dreamspinner for asking for I would never know if you never did.
I also 'learnt' something else apart from NY.
I have to share my experience from the other boards, while it can be frustrating when you have newcomers asking same/redundant (to you readers but not to the NEW comers) questions, at the same time you have to be in their shoes.
Most are genuine questions - newcomers are unsure of situations, both the questions (the very reason why questions arise to begin with) and/or how to navigate *as in clicking the banana*... plus don't be surprised for there are some who are not google savy.
Being the host/leader, one should learn to practise some poise and tact for after all you are the representative of whatever group/community you are leading when relating to others, especially newcomers.
This is the very reason that puts me off of the other boards. The unfriendly-nature, the intimidating environment.... where initially you came to learn while at the same time you fear to ask.... cannot move forward, cannot reverse so I pushed the eject button instead.
Lastly, as a leader/motivational person myself, I was taught that if I have nothing nice to say, its best to say nothing.

It is also the case that google not always provides clear and best information
about subjects. (I do think we need a new kind of searchengine with pictures)
Some info is just not there (only in books etc..) or is hard to find due to the imperfect searchengine, or you have to look for hours, and swim through not relevant text.
So asking is always ok. :)

RVM, i checked out a few of the links you posted for NT. I really enjoyed reading about Braggs on We Like It Raw - scary to think about such a process creating a food that is on the shelf as a health food!
Its interesting because I used braggs long ago, then started using shoyu and the last time i was in the city, could only get braggs and find it waaaay salty - I have been using it but watering it down. Now i want to throw it out!
So thanks for posting that link!

Yes, thanks for posting this Mama.
Wow, I've always felt something was dodgy about Braggs. At the time, I thought it may have to do with GM soy. I've gone through phases being off it entirely, then coming back to it again. I'm allergic to wheat so tamari/soy sauce is out of the question. Even Nama Shoyu has some wheat in it. :(
Guess we'll just have to go with plain sea salt/Real Salt then.
Don is dumping what's left of the Braggs right now as I'm typing this! lol :D

Ahhhh, yes!
I went thru a phase of loving the nutritional yeast. Ate it on my greens with lemon juice. Used it generously and got a wicked rash all up and down my legs along my gall bladder channerl. MSG woudl be the likely culprit! I quit it and the rash abated significantly, though I feel it started a feedback loop of sorts concerning my skin,. Months later, I am still detoxing thru that channel!
I have resorted to dehydrating sunflower seeds and then grinding them into a powder with lots of spices anf using that as my cheeze sub.
When I was on the yeast i was crazy for it...classic MSG symptom. ;)

Dream,
I thought you might be interested in the following bit of info posted by Mosaica in another thread:
Dr. Gabriel Cousens in his book "Rainbow green live-food cuisine" says:
"In all soy products that are heated, MSG is naturally created as a by-product. This includes Nama Shoyu which is a cooked soy-wheat-barley combination that is fermented, though not pasteurized. It is both an MSG and high mycotoxin product."
I feel the safest when I use a good quality salt (celtic or tibetan).

to be able to come and ask questions! Don, thanks for the mia culpa!:) You all are great and I have learned some really good stuff about MSG!! I read some of the sites that were suggested by you, RVM, and found out more than I could have ever found on my own. I am going to stick to celtic sea salt and I am going to try the one suggestion (can't remember which 'here' it was, LOL):D but it was dehydrating celery and lemon and then grinding them in the herb grinder.
Thanks again!

I think most of us agree on the NS & Braggs AA containing MSG -- anyone want to weigh in on the NY?
I think that anything that has yeast = MSG. Anyone know of anything different than that? I have read much about these topics a few years ago, I can't find all the supporting info, but I am pretty sure it is out there...somewhere in cyberspace!:p
Dream -- glad to help out!:) I think we are all learning a ton!:D
Hypno -- I like that idea with the SF Seeds! Thanks.

Or you can try another product: it is made from seawater without the sodium
(nATRIUM). DON'T KNOW IF IT EXISTS IN THE US?
