Hey guys! sorry if this is the wrong spot to put this. i'm not sure where to put it.
i like to start using natural vegan hair care items now. any recommendations? i have long straight black hair, tangles easily, oily by maybe 24 hours... seems to have an odor w/ conventional shampoo after an hour... i usually don't blow dry... air dry. i'm basically looking for something i can wash my hair w/, allow to air dry & will be nice for 2-4 days before the next wash. :(
i've done some searching on drugstore.com and looked in the natural products thread, but i'm still iffy. :o

Yucca root has a natural soap in it that is ph balanced but I don't know where to get it.
I have been wanting to try the soapnuts also. Perhaps put a few of them in a spray bottle with water. Haven't been able to get them either. Although I have seen people complain that they just don't get your clothes clean.
I just do not feel ready for the no poo method because my scalp gets itchy and I can't seem to get past that.
I am not happy with the supposedly natural shampoo bars. They make my hair and scalp feel very dirty with wax build-up. Plus they snarl my hair badly.
Meanwhile I think that I will go with Dr Bronners liquid soap that I am also brushing my teeth with.

You may want to check out www.longhaircommunity.com for some expert advice. The people there really know their stuff, and I mean well!
I know Llamas is vegan and supposedly very good.
There is also a method of hair washing using Indian herbs that is quite popular on the long hair community boards. I used to be so well adversed in it but I don't go there anymore. The herbs were Shikakai, Aritha, Bringhaj, and one other I can't quite remember.
Anyway, best of luck to you and I truly hope you do go check out their forums.

I adore MaxGreen Alchemy!
http://www.maxgreenalchemy.com
And this is a good place to order it from online:
http://www.haircareusa.com/max_green_alchemy.htm
It is cheaper there. This brand is pretty hard to find. I have never seen it at Whole Foods.
I love the conditioner too and use it as a leave-in conditioner rather than rinsing it out.
Good luck, Gigi

Try NO-POOing!
I haven't used shampoo since I read about No-Pooing on this forum!
My hair looks AWESOME!
I dissolve 1 tsp of baking soda in 1 cup water and put it in a squeeze bottle
I get my hair wet, squeeze on the solution, scrub lightly, and rinse
Then I put 1 tsp of ACV with 1 cup of water, put it in the same bottle
Squeeze it on and rinse
My hair is VERY happy!
So is my pocketbook.
It has NEVER been oily at all since starting this ... how long ago... a couple of months?

hi rowan. i've tried the no-poo, & i couldn't bare the adjustment period. :o i'd like to try it again in the future though. it's one of my goals. ;)
i'm browsing through the long hair forum... can't register for some reason. i read about washing w/ castor oil & extra virgin olive oil? interesting! i'm still reading some more on the forum. my biggest both is the tangles! i tangle so easily! :(

OK RowanC. I don't have a squeeze bottle but I tried your formula today and am going to continue for awhile. I used to use the ACV all over my body as I have always had problem skin that no cosmetic item seemed to relieve. The ACV only relieved it a bit plus the smell seems to stay with me. But I do react negatively to every skin and hair product I have ever tried and I must say that my scalp is doing much better since I did the baking soda and ACV today. Oh and the long ends of my hair has been snarling up really badly especially when I use something like Burts Bees shampoo bar but I had absolutely no snarls or knots at all. My hair combed out very easily as if I had used an expensive conditioner. I am not sure if I like how my hair feels like right now. I am used to thinking that it has to be stripped squeaky clean but it does not smell and it does feel like the natural oils are in it and not stripped out. Plus alot less fell out. My hair has been falling out like crazy and I have so little left that I have been wearing the scarfs and now someone wants to take me shopping for a wig.
Now I have a female dog who is just like me. She has very sensitive skin and reacts badly to everything I have ever tried to wash her with. Her 6 inch long wooly white fur gets stained with dirt though. So I am going to try this with her but I don't know if it will actually get her fur white again. We shall see. If she does not get clean I can always shampoo her first and then do the baking soda and ACV to neutralize the skin and any possible reactions. Her skin reacts so badly that she gets smelly and stinky right after the bath. She hates it and although she has come to hate bathtime as she gets older and more sensitive - she knows she needs it and does not fight it anymore cuz she hates being stinky too.

when i did the bs and acv, my hair went limp. :( a lot of hair fell out! i just couldn't do it after that. hoping eating cleaner, longer, will help to adjust better to going no poo.

Well we are all different. That is why there are so many different products on the market all sustaining themselves well. I have seen of people making their own shampoos of rosemary and other herbs but do not remember where I saw the recipes. Will be interested to see what you find that works.
I have to admit that my remaining hair is limp. Stylewise it is a huge zero.

Hi guys,
I was curious and made a research on homemade shampoos. This is what I found:
Herbal shampoo
4 oz of castile soap with any scent is that available – plain, peppermint, eucalyptus.
½ oz of rosemary - stimulates the hair follicles and helps to prevent premature baldness
½ oz of sage – has antioxidants and keeps things from spoiling and is antibacterial
½ oz of nettles – acts as a blood purifier, blood stimulator, contains a large source of nutrients for hair growth
½ of lavender – controls the production of sebaceous gland oil and reduces itchy and flaky scalp conditions
2000 mg of MSM – provides organic sulfur to your scalp, which improves the health and strength of your hair. It also helps to drive herbal nutrient into the skin and follicles where they can do the most good.
One empty 8 oz plastic bottle, or any other empty shampoo or soap bottle.
Mix the herbs in a mason jar, which has a lid. Boil 2 cups of distilled water. Add 3 heaping tablespoons of the mixed herbs into the boiling water. Pull the boiling water and herbs off the stove. Let the herb mixture sit for 30 – 40 minutes. Put the 2000mg of MSM into the herb mixture after 30 minutes of cooling. After 40 minutes and the MSM is melted, strain the herbal mixture into a bowl.
Pour 2 to 2 1/2 oz of strained herbal tea into the 8 oz plastic bottle. Now, pour the 4 oz of castile soap into the 8 oz plastic bottle. Cap the bottle and shake to mix the ingredients.
The shampoo is now finished and ready for use. Use this as a base for all of the shampoos you make. You can add different herbs as you learn what these herbs do and how they help your hair. You can vary the ingredients according to your taste. But now you have a shampoo that has no additives that can harm you.

Luckitri,
When you said your dog and you suffer the same skin problems, it raised a red flag for me!
Are you positive the two of you aren't being exposed to some environmental toxin? Where do you live? Have you had your water and soil checked? Have you dowsed for a noxious zone where your bed is located?
This concerns me...

Well we have lived in at least 5 different properties together with different furnitures even and different soaps - I think that we are just two females with sensitive skin. We both itch regardless of what soap is used. I would no longer know what to consider. . . unless it is air pollution that I cannot change unless I leave town.
Greater Phoenix Az area. Lots of dust, very little moisture.
guys! i forget we all are so unique that despite such variations in feedback regarding diff. products that I MUST try it for myself & see if it suits ME. i definitely want to use natural vegan friendly products. that's for sure. it's not like the conventional cruelty products work on me anyway.
