Is something I have just looked into and started yesterday. Anyone have more experience with this or info to share?
I find it is not bad and if it has any benefits I am all for it :D The only thing is it says you should just do this for 10-20 mins first thing in the AM and nothing else, but as any Mom of young children will tell you -this is just not possible!!!;) ;) :p So I am doing it but not exclusively every morning :)

Hi there. I have been experimenting with oil pulling for the past couple of days. If you go to http://www.oilpulling.com you can get more info. They only talk about using sesame and sunflower oil. I ran out of sesame so I started using coconut. I have heard of others getting results from coconut oil. Also they suggest you only op while sitting down. But hey who has that kind of time twice a day (lol:) ). I do it while doing other things so I would say you could tend to the kids, clean, etc. as long as you were aware not to swallow the oil by accident. I do not follow the "rules" religiously and do what I can to work within my life. Although I do it on an empty stomach. :D

I did this for a bit, but between that and skin brushing and everything else...magnesium water...lemon water...green smoothie...the mornings were taking on a life of their own, lol!

I've lapsed but liked how it felt when I was doing it/ I felt like I got alot of nasal drainage cleared up, and my teeth felt nice. My heels might have been softer...but I wasn't sure. Many people report that theirs are miraculously smoothed by it.

Unfortunately I did not experience any major detoxing with OP-ing....but I may not have had much left to detox...others seemed really happy with it.

I would do it after skin brushing, and after brushing and flossing my teeth, while taking a shower and/or checking morning emails.

I like the sesame oil best....it's traditionally used as a puriier...more so than the other types of oils mentioned....esp. in ayurveda, so I was a fan of that. I defintely noticed I felt better when OP-ing with raw sesame...actually the lag in benefits seemed to coincide with getting a cold pressed sesame which I do not believe was truly raw, as I could taste a cooked-type aftertaste in it.

Best of luck with this. I'm glad to see a thread for it here, as you raw-bees are the undisputed detox gurus!

my biggest enemy to op-ing is keeping my mouth shut for 15 - 20 min. :)
it did make my skin very velvety smooth and my heels (hooves) got alot better. teeth felt great.
not so much detox.

favorite oil mix:
coconut/safflower w/ a couple drops peppermint oil.

ahem..... .... no comment....

heheeeeee!!! I LOOVEz YA SNOW!!! :D :D

okay - the first time I ever op'd... the brown stains on my teeth disappeared! now - I had smoked for over 39 years and I thought the stains would never leave - so I was quite happy ... shocked ... but very HAPPY!!

the other blessings I am experiencing are softer elbows, my heels are beginning to soften, and my face is looking softer, my skin seems more supple.

and my teeth feel really REALLY CLEAN!
yea - I'd do some of that research mentioned on the other post. It's interesting reading!

I use coconut oil - it's rather tasty - and it's supposed to really make your teeth white.

I bless Alba everyday for introducing this oil pulling to the RFT crowd! I highly recommend it!! :D

Hi :)
I've been oil pulling for a couple months now, every morning. The most noticable change for the better is in my mouth...gums are firmer and healthier, teeth are whiter. Skin is also softer, and initially I noticed I slept better as well. Now that I'm doing so much that is good for me, I no longer know what to attribute each benefit to! What a great 'dilema', heh. My partner and I both notice all these things, as well as improved eyesight, but that one is so out there that we can hardly believe it yet:D

Aren't you supposed to do this BEFORE you brush/floss?

Marcus just busted his broken tooth out MORE last night, eating. I can tell it's gonna be painful. I want him to do this for now --- he has to go to the free clinic or whatever for dental, soon enough. :-(

Anyways, doesn't this HELP teeth and teeth infections, etc? Anything helps, he even hates his teeth's color. But I know it helps more than teeth...

It does!!!
David has horrible teeth and much pain most days. He has been OP for 3-4 weeks now and has no pain, swelling in the gums has disappeared and his teeth are so much whiter than they had been prior. Stained from smoking, coffee, etc. He was planning a trip to the dentist, I knew the dentist would tell him that he would loose some teeth, that is how bad it was. Today he is pain free and loving it. I will post photos of the transformation as soon as he lets me take a new photo, sometimes that alone can be like "pulling teeth" lol

I have been having him do the OP 2X a day. Once when waking for 20 minutes and again when he gets home from work for another 20.

I find that when Oil pulling it is best to keep busy, 20 minutes is a long time. Take a shower, water the garden, do laundry, make the beds etc... If I am busy I can do the whole 20 min. If not busy it is really hard for me.

It is also helping him with detox effects of ridding the caffiene from his body. No nasty headaches you get when you are off the coffee.

I highly recommend it to all!

We began using coconut oil, that I already had on hand. I bought the most inexpensive brand of cold-pressed Sesame oil at the WFS and have been using that for awhile, Sesame is recommended.

I read about oil pulling a while back and heard lots of great testimonies. There certainly seems to be some great benefits from it. I think I might incorporate it into my routine. I wonder though, as I'm full of toxins right now and only at the start of an almighty detox, if oil pulling while I'm fasting would cause extreme detox symtoms. Thoughts?

Hi - OP seems to be fairly gentle. Are you Raw or just beginning the journey? I have not done any OPing while fasting, however I look foreward to it during my next fast, I think it would be very beneficial. You may try it for a few days or even a week to see what happens.

Good Luck

I just came off of a fast and I op'ed with coconut oil - and I looved it! While fasting - my detox wasn't as strong as it has been b4 - initiallly I thought it was because of the op'ing... kinda helped pull toxins out in an easy and relaxed manner... but it could be the detox was less cuz I've been raw for almost 5 months. :o Not sure - but either way - it was a great addtion to the fast!!

Wow I am glad I started this too RVMama! I actually forgot to do it a couple mornings and was bummed that I would be starting all over but my Mom is here visiting and we did it together this AM and wow! My teeth are whiter than they have been in ages!
Thank you Raw Love for sharing your Hippies experience as I too have awful teeth and was really hoping this would help, I will continue more diligently now that I hear of his great results!!:D
I use sesame but only in the AM before brushing and eating/drinking and for 10-20 mins. :) :)

Hey you all this is a great thread!:D

Tips - tips - tips I like em,
I 've done some op in the past with not much results:(
But I was not doing in long enough as i see from your times. I was only doing it for 3 to 4 min. And I was using sesame oil. Doing it in the morning before i brush my teeth. But that oil made my mouth have this after taste of burnt food kinda taste. I like the coconut suggestion.

Living Sun Fodds,
thanks for the link.

I surprised to see all the positive things:
softer skin and heels - teeth stains gone - gums stronger - teeth whitter - better sleep - better eyesight.
Can't wait to go and pick up some coconut oil:D

I use organic cold-pressed sesame as well. My partner had an abscess and I went online looking for a natural way for him to find relief, and I came upon some info on oil pulling and it seemed simple and he had nothing to lose.

It was so helpful that he healed his abscess and never needed the dentist and over time, his mouth his repairing itself. We've turned several folks onto it, and those who stick with it, are so glad they know about it.

Go for it :)

OIL PULLING INSTRUCTIONS: (http://www.earthclinic.com/Remedies/oil_pulling.html)

NOTE: These are instructions from India in which only 2 types of oil can be used. However, as you will read below in our Reader Feedback section, people are experimenting with different oils, adding anti-bacterial and anti-viral oil essences. Soon we might have a purist vs. renegade oil pulling battle!

INSTRUCTIONS: First thing in the morning, before brushing your teeth, eating or drinking, take 1 TBSP of either sesame or sunflower oil. Put the oil in your mouth, tilt your chin up and slowly swish, suck, chomp and pull through the teeth. Do this for at least 10 minutes. 15 - 20 minutes is better. You want the oil to become a thin, white foam when you finally spit it out. If it's still yellow, you haven't done it long enough.

You can do this 2 more times during the day if you want to detox faster. Make sure you do it on an empty stomach, however. Spit it out in the toilet when your mouth is full and rinse your mouth out well.

Follow with 2 - 3 glasses of water.

DO NOT SWALLOW THE OIL.
It now contains parasites and bacteria!

DO NOT GARGLE IN THE THROAT.
THE OIL IS MEANT TO BE SWISHED IN THE MOUTH ONLY.

DO IT SLOWLY.

The top new home rememdy is an ancient Ayurvedic cure called Oil Pulling or Oil Swishing.

HOW IT WORKS:
The oil pulls all mucous, bacteria and toxins from your body through your saliva. According to Ayurvedic medicine, mucous is a poison that must be removed.

Note #1:
Keeping the chin tilted up makes sure the oil gets to the back molars.

Note #2:
The old school says that only sesame and sunflower oils produce favorable results. However, our readers report success using other oils too.

Note #3:
If after meals, wait at least 4 hours before you Oil Pull. After drinking, wait 1 hour.

Note #4:
A worsening of symptoms is an excellent indication that the disease/ailment is being cured.

Note #5:
Do not stop Oil Pulling if you feel aggravated symptoms or heightened side effects after a day or two. Your body is healing.

Note #6:
Will your dental fillings fall out? Possible but highly unlikely. The oil starts to thin out after 2-3 minutes because your saliva is constantly being mixed in. Eating hard candy is a more likely cause of filling damage.

I went to my local Health Food Store and found only two types of Sesame Oil. I bought Spectrum Naturals (http://www.spectrumorganics.com/)Expeller Pressed "refined" Sesame Oil (16 oz for $6.25).

I woke up this morning and took 1 TBSP of the oil, and gently swooshed is around in my mouth for 20 minutes. To pass the time, I set my timer and did some posts of the research I did on oil pulling!:D

Before I was even ready to stop, the timer went off & I spit the oil in the toilet -- it was milky-white, so I know I did it for a long enough time.:) I rinsed my mouth with water and my finger, and then used a dry toothbrush to get it really good. I am drinking a couple of glasses of water, as recommended, then I will have my regular morning smoothie.

My teeth feel really good, but that is all I notice at the moment. My husband is doing it right now, when showering and getting ready for the day.

Can't wait to report something cool!

I just got back from a week of dog sitting WITH NO COMPUTER and I'm catching up on the posts and I'm so glad you started this thread Danny...Alba had started on on RFT and I know so many of us just love oil pulling.

I've been doing it now for many months, can't remember now, 5? 6? I got results the very first time I tried it and all I had available that day was coconut butter...my top teeth are caps and are very white and I often wondered if the dentist had overdone the whiteness cuz they didn't match my bottom teeth. One 10 minute session of oil pulling and they matched the top ones. I was an immediate believer.

I've since bought sesame and sunflower and alternate. For a while I was doing it 3 times a day and the easiest time is when I'm in front of the computer...20 minutes passes real quick. For a while I felt like I was becoming addicted cuz I couldn't wait till the next time. I feel really good afterwards...high? Not really a high but really really good. I have several SAD friends doing it, too and they can't believe how white there teeth have gotten.

I have noticed that the whiteness happens quicker on some though everyone notices a change , sometimes quick sometimes slow. I have to wonder if it happens quicker because of the enzymes in a raw foodists body???? My daughter who doesn't eat to well has results just slower.

My heels seem smoother, my face is smoother and I have to wonder is it the oil pulling??? The fine lines around my eyes are smoothing out, too!

This will be part of my day forever....

I really didn't think much happened this morning after the first oil pull... BUUUUUTTTTT......

I tried it today for the second time.

I just couldn't last very long. I started to gag after about 5 minutes or so. I thought I was going to throw up. I just hate the mouth feel of any oil. I have never liked oily food for that same reason. I can't stand having oil on my lips etc...

I used coconut oil because I thought I would have a bigger chance of lasting with it since I do like the taste of coconuts. :)

One thing my husband reminded me of when I told him about this is that if water gets mixed into oil that is in your car it will turn milky white. So, isn't that just natural for oil and water (or saliva) to mix and turn white?

For those of you that eat pretty low fat.....does oil pulling make you gain weight? I kept thinking the whole time that it was a lot of fat for my body to be absorbing. Just curious to what you have experienced.

I would love white teeth, though.

Princess Elaine
08-14-2007, 11:25 AM
Tracy, I know we all have different tolerance levels for things...like the oil, it doesn't bother me at all where others will gag.

I read some of the testimonials and weight loss was one of the benefits. How this works I have no clue. I've read and reread different articles and other then my WHITE teeth, my smooth heels and my face being smoother...it amazes me how it works....

I don't see how you could absorb enough oil to make a difference in your low fat diet. I try to eat low fat, too yet the results from oil pulling are so worth it.

Hello all, I did Oil Pulling sometime back and did only about 2 weeks. I did not notice much difference for my teeth were already white (its so white that when I went for my tooth crowning, the dentist looked at his teeth model chart to get a white teeth color to match mine but there was none!! he joked that even his teeth model were more yellow than mine  :D ).... and my gums were strong too before but I do remember gagging badly the first 2-3 days but I persisted. All I remembered was feeling 'cleaner' in my orals as opposed to prior OP.

I slowed down on the practise because of pure 'laziness' and no major effects on me but what did it was when I had a gay guy friend who came to visit me and used my toilet, he came out of the toilet with the oil bottle in his hand and went..... 'Ai-saaaaaaah.... sesame oil in the toilet huh..... oooooh how kinky you are..... '.... as he sashayed back into the toilet!!! *gulp* :o :D

I love oil pulling....I start my day with it...(like right now) and being on the computer 20 minutes it goes so fast....I like the way I feel and I know my skin is softer and though I was quite skeptical about those that said their heels were softer I see that mine are, too!!!....I think the white teeth an extra benefit to the smoother and clear skin I have I noticed the cleaning of my teeth on the first try. I see it as something I'll always do and for a while I felt addicted to it...I couldn't wait till the next time...I even had a bottle of oil at work to do before I ate lunch.

I hope everyone gives it a try...oh, one of my patients is from Romania and she says she's been oil pulling (she called it oil gargling) since she was a little girl...it was something everyone in her family did and now her little girl does it as a matter of fact every morning.

Happy oil pulling to you, Elaine

Been OP'ing now for about 10 days I guess. I, too, found it difficult the first couple of days, with the gagging reflex kicking in. Plus my cheek muscles had to get in shape. :D But now I'm loving it! I also do it in front of the computer and it goes by super fast.

The only thing I've noticed so far is how white my teeth have become. Woo-Hoo! Unlike you, Aisah, mine have always been yellowish  so I'm totally stoked about this! My skin is also really soft right now, but I hadn't made the connection with OP per se (my starting to drink kombucha tea daily seemed to have softened it up already). Watch out! I'm gonna have baby soft skin soon! lol

Do you guys use cold-pressed sesame oil? I looked it up at our HFS and they didn't have any (only unrefined) so right now we're using sunflower oil. We're considering buying a 1 gallon container of coconut oil. Has anyone experimented OP with it instead of sesame/sunflower?

StarFire
08-27-2007, 11:18 AM
Has anyone tried op'ing with coconut oil? I looove op'ing with coconut oil!!! Alba (who stated the op thread over at RFT) ... she suggested it to me cuz it really makes your teeth white.

I tried to do research on op'ing with coconut oil --but only found benefits of ingesting it not oil pulling with it... but that was okay tooo-- cuz by reading all of that info - that's what got me started eating the coconut oil 3x's a day!!

but I figured if Alba said it could be used and was beneficial (it certainly wouldn't hurt me in any way)... so I tried it. Since it is pleasant tasting - I didn't go thru the 'gag reflex thingy'.

My teeth were so poorely stained from so many years of smoking - and after only one use they were whiter... SHOCKINGLY WHITER!!

the only thing about op'ing... it takes time an if my day is jammed sometimes working that in (morning time) can be a hassel. (sometimes I don't have an extra 20 minutes in the morning - and I'm already getting up so early for work...) but .... oh well... it's great so I'll stop complaining now!!

RAWK ON OP'ers... yep me too....!!! loooving that oil!! SEE ----> :D !!

I have a few SAD friends doing it, too,and whenever we see each other we all show our teeth, it's kinda funny now though it took them a bit longer to see results (like 10 days) and I'm thinking it's the enzymes in the saliva that help whiten the teeth and SAD people don't have as much as people that eat raw, just guessing though....all I know is I love the way it feels....I get a bit high from it...could that be my imagination??? sure feels good though.

I have a problem with oil pulling (beside the nausea). My mouth fills up quickly with saliva and after only 5 minutes or so I feel my mouth is completely full and it will leak out! I'm afraid the 1 tablespoon of oil plus all the saliva just can't fit in my mouth... What would be the solution here? Should I reduce the amount, maybe 1 teaspoon of oil? Is it gonna be effective as well?

My teeth look whiter after OPing. But by the end of the day they are back to normal. Do yours do that too or are they staying white?

Carmella
09-10-2007, 11:10 AM
Mosaica,
I had to observe how it is for me for a few days before making any suggestion. ;)

I see what you mean about how the mouth gets full. It happens to me as well, although I've never had leaking problems. I find that I do swallow some of the saliva (not mixed with oil) during the process. However, there is still saliva mixing in as well, as you were pointing out. My suggestion would be to spit a little out if you find that it becomes really uncomfortable. Not sure if using less would give the same results, but why not experiment?

Sorry Tracy, can't be of much help here as I haven't really noticed any difference.

Okay this may be a weird question but I think it's a valid concern.

I've oil pulled off and on for months. I haven't done it in a couple weeks. I got a tattoo on the inside of my lower lip this past Tuesday and I'm worried about the oil drawing the ink out. Inner mouth tattoos are already hard for some people to keep. Anyone have any experience with this?

Wow!!! the tattoo sounds cool!!!...Can you post a picture?

I don't know if it would hurt the tattoo....I know it's supposed to be detoxing from the membranes in our mouths but would that mean more cells were removed, too????

Mosaica, when I use coconut oil I notice my mouth fills up fast so I just spit a little out.

I've been doing this for almost a year and it's become a morning ritual...after my walk/run I sit in front of the computer for my cool down and oil pull at the same time...I've become so accustomed to it I often forget it's there and 30 minutes or more have passed.

I definitely see results in my skin and also my teeth ... oh, at the beginning I spent a lot of time on websites doing research and there is a site that says this is a scam and there's no scientific way it could do anything...and I say, hmmmmm, then why are my teeth white and my skin so smooth??? It sure works for me.

Wow!!!! That is AWESOME!!!!....I've got few tattoos and some hurt more then others...I can only think that would of been a real OUCH!!!

Do you have other tattoos and if so how would you measure that in pain??? I measured the one on my spinal cord a '10'...the ones on my arms a '5'.....

I'm a massage therapist and they're many gifts in doing this, one of them is seeing everyone's ink and hearing all about it....

I love your ink!!!

Thanks :D

Yes, that was my 4th. Really to be honest none of them felt like what I'd consider "painful." I have one going about 3/4 around my arm, and of course the inner arm hurt a bit more than the other parts. I have one on the back base of my neck which didn't feel like much. I have one on my leg, above my ankle and that one didn't really feel like much either.

The one inside my lip made my eyes water, but it wasn't really a reaction to pain. I mentioned to my tat guy that it was weird because it didn't hurt but it made my eyes water, and he said his inner lip tattoo was the only one of his that made his eyes water, too. So I guess it's just an involuntary reaction. But yeah, totally not bad at all.

I do know that they tend to fade into nothing for most people, but my tattoo guy has had his for 4 years and he says if it fades it'll be within a week or so and to come back in and have it redone and it should be fine. But so far so good. It's still there & still black. So YAY. I hope it stays. I may go get it redone just in case.

Thanks for your post...I LOVE tattoo stories and everyone has something different to say....and interesting how we all have different pain tolerances...I thought mine was pretty high until I was in the 3rd hour on my spinal cord...YIKES!!! I looked down and my toes were curling!!!!

I do like your tattoo...cool!!!!

Hi!
Sorry tattoo talking ladies, I am gonna talk OIL! :D

AARRGGGGGGGG!!!!!!
I was doing it consistantly for like 6 weeks and feeling good, better teeth and skin etc, and then one morning a few days ago I knocked my bottle of sesame oil off the counter and it SMASHED!!!!!! Bah, what a mess. :( I am just grateful that my little ones stayed out of the kitchen while I cleaned it up :)
So yeah, I haven't done it for a while now...
I have always done about a teaspoon instead of a T because it was just too much! Oh and
RVM- you should have seen me tipping my head back and "talking" (or garbling) to my two boys while oil pulling in the am. :D
I didn't do much dribbling though, so I think I got the amount right;) :p

Yo!

I was OP-ing over the summer, but stopped for a fast and just started again on Thursday. When I first started over the summer, I went through kind of a detox day... and I just had that again today. I'm feeling better now. I'm looking forward to seeing what OP can do for my hair in conjunction with no 'poo (that's no shampoo... sicko :p).

See, right now I've got dandruff from the whole no 'poo thing, and my scalp is all dry and itchy. I noticed that OP was really good for my skin over the summer, so this is my experiment: to see if OP can cure my no 'poo dandruff and make my hair purdy again.

Let us know what changes you go through....I don't recall feeling any detox but I do know I got addicted to OP'n for a while because of the 'high' I felt...not giddy fall down high but realllllllllllllllllllly feeling good!!!

I sure don't know what it is but I like it...

We've just finished our 3rd bottle of oil. Hang on, let me check on the calendar... Wow! We've been OP'ing for almost 2 months now!

We started off with sunflower oil, then switched to sesame after the first bottle. Today we've run out of the sesame so thought we'd try coconut. It's still swooshing around in my mouth as I'm typing so can't tell if there's any major difference yet in terms of teeth color or whatever.

I've noticed that after my OP (esp with the sesame), I would invariably have to spit out some mucus so something IS happening for sure!

Also, I could tell my skin was very soft but this morning, I reached over to scratch my elbow... only to discover that it was super smooth!!! Wow! I am amazed! This has got to be the first time in my entire life - well, since being an adult at least! :p Same goes with my knees, and my heels aren't totally smooth yet but def getting there.

Woo-Hoo! I am stoked! This stuff is really working! :D

Good news all,

I went to the dental hygenist yesterday, and she was dazzled as she checked my gums for "pockets." I noticed she was marking my chart so I asked her if my gums were receding more than usual. She said, "actually...your gums are in better shape than they have been for years." She asked me if I was flossing a lot, and I told her I was oil pulling. Of course, she never heard of anything like oil pulling before, but said to continue doing it because it seems to have made a difference in my gums.

Hi RL, RVM, DB, JM, Flanny & Carm,

I absolutely love the way oil pulling leaves my teeth feeling. I can feel things slip through my teeth as I'm swishing, and believe me, my teeth are tightly jammed together. I even have a broken tooth that my dentist said to have pulled, but upon my last check-up he noticed that the gums around it aren't as inflamed as they once were.
My choice for oil is sesame and sunflower. Had to use cold pressed olive oil once, which I found a little thick, but it was better than nothing. I'll keep you all posted on new revelatoins.

we've been having trouble finding oil in this area. I'm going to Charlotte NC today. Anyone know of any HFS worth buying from in that area that I can pick up some oil? If not, perhaps some affordable online alternatives? We do order some stuff through Dutch Valley but we have to have a $500.00 minimum order and the family as no need for anything there yet.

It's the chemicals from the jetfuel (purified kerosene) in the winter air making it difficult for your skin to recover

Flanny are you serious or pulling my leg??!!??

Flanny
12-07-2007, 07:21 AM
Doing a little leg pulling in addition to the oil pulling ;).

On the serious side, winter weather makes for difficult control of rough/dry skin. More problems with it have been reported than before but that can be due to several possible reasons including they just didn't worry about it back then (or keep record) to the chemicals we burn/release into the air. I don't know of any definitive studies but my personal, unproven, untested hypothesis on the matter is the increased emissions from industrialization and fuel powered mechanical travel.

But I was trying my had at leg pulling on the oil pulling with my previous post :D

Wooooooooooow, oil pulling is amazing.
I have very weak gums (they bleed a lot gengivitis) and my teeth are stained (medicine against gengivitis). The funny thing is that started when I brushed like five times a day (was obsessed with teeth hygiene and it had to go wrong). Many years have passed now but the bleeding comes somedays, specially when I am stressed or sleep to late.

I did a 15 minutes oil pulling with sesame oil... it was really awesome. The teeth looked really clean and my gums feel stronger (just done it once and already felt a good result) I will be doing this for a while and I´ll tell you what happens.

Can I use olive oil?

Than you for this thread, it made be experience something new and very useful.

Hi Soleta,

You can use any type of oil, but from what I understand sesame is the best. I've used sunflower oil, olive oil, safflower oil and sesame oil. I use whatever happens to be in my pantry at the moment, but I prefer the sesame. Oil pulling is one of those things that has made a difference for me. I hope you reap the benefits of it as I have. Maybe, Lavendarj should try this remedy.:D

That's it, I'm getting sesame oil and trying it :)

I haven't found any scientific studies on it, except for 1: it's as effective as chlorexidine at killing decay-causing germs in the mouth. Pretty cool!

I really need something to strengthen my gums. My braces really destroyed my lower gum line and now it's receding like crazy... and I don't want to pay thousands of $$ to get a gum transplant!

Pirawna
02-18-2009, 03:08 PM
Did you have those wrap around braces? I did and my lower gum line receded a lot.

Any oil should work because fat sticks to fat so the little critters in there get stuck in the oil like a magnet and are pulled out. This is according to Dr. Bruce Fife.

Velvet
02-18-2009, 03:51 PM
Wrap around? What do you mean?... It's probably it though, because my lower gum line is in pretty bad shape :(

I'll try with olive oil, since I have a bunch of that already!

I had those braces where there was a big metal band wrapped around each tooth. Total metalmouth.

As opposed to some of the kids who just had this little square that stuck to the front of the tooth to hold the wire. I remember thinking my lower teeth were going to be pulled out when they were taking those bands off. Horrible.

Velvet
02-19-2009, 10:09 AM
I had the regular ones, but it still destroyed the gum. I had 2 friends tell me about this when I said I wanted to get braces, but my dentist said it wouldn't be an issue... And then I moved to the US and had to get a new dentist, so now they can each blame the other for it

The only question I have is for those of you who do it more than once a day. I had the same problem, I'm sure that some things work in a way that is too complex for me to understand, but my husband is a HUGE skeptic so I have to do my homework.
I read a study that found that oil pulling is as efficient as chlorhexidine at killing the bacteria that causes cavity. This would explain the whiter teeth and stronger gums perhaps. Also, if we don't swallow all the bacteria accumulated in the mouth during the night, it might have some kind of beneficial effect.

Pirawna
02-26-2009, 10:21 AM
i work in a lab with scientists. It always annoys me that unti they read published studies on something, it doesn't exist for them. I swear, you could tell them the sky looks blue, but until they read a study on it, they won't admit its true. I always say, before there were any publications on it, humans have still known for ages that garlic is good fro you or that silver is a good antibiotic. bleh. They tell me GMO food is great and I can't get better on my own without antibiotics and vaccines.

But anyhoo, Dr. Bruce Fife claims that the oil is like oil in an engine, collecting all the dirt and grime and pulling it out. LIke how I use oil as cleansing cream. Also fat is attracted to fat (why its so hard to clean oil off of rubber or plastic bowls) and the lipid covering of the bacteria cells are stuck in the oil like a magnet and pulled out.

Something like that.

I started oil pulling in February. I use organic sesame oil and do it first thing every morning for 20 minutes. Then I immediately brush my teeth. Yesterday I had my teeth cleaned for the first time in two years. (I kept putting it off because I hate the x-rays!) The hygienist was amazed at how little plaque I had and the condition of my gums. Her comment: "You are a really good flosser." I floss only at night, if at all! Then when the dentist checked my teeth out, he, too, commented on the condition of my teeth and gums. I am a chicken, I guess, because I did not mention the oil pulling. Anyway, I just wanted to post this to let people know that it really does help the teeth and gums.

BUMP, PUMP!!!
I just got back from the dentist's office; got my cleaning done...
The hygienist asked me when was the last time my teeth had been cleaned... I said about 4 years ago... She goes WOW... Then she finished in about 35 minutes! They usually work for an hour... I didn't want the fluoride application, but even then, it's been a short session... She barely had anything to do... :D

Oil pulling is fantastic! Ever since I have changed from regular fluoride-free toothpaste to using toothsoap and a really nice all natural tooth cleaning "scrub" by a brand called PerBlan, ánd doing the oil pullin daily with organic cold-pressed sunflower seed oil, my teeth have gotten whiter, my gums are not as sensitive and easy to bleed when flossing. I am sure there are other cleaning wonderful side-effects of oil pulling that I am not directly noticing, but I have gone raw and started oil pulling at the same time, and all I can say is that I feel really great!!

Here's a follow-up to my earlier post about my dentist being amazed at the status of my mouth. After my experience, my husband was convinced to start this regimen. He saw the dentist today, and the dentist was also amazed at the state of his mouth. My husband's mouth is really not good - he has had periodontal surgery, but the dentist today said he doesn't see any more of that in the future. OBY: my husband is not raw, he is as SAD as they come - but a wonderful man!

mormor, that is great news!
I really think there's something to say for oil-pulling, the 'science' behind it makes perfect sense to me.
I also believe we can moslty be our own doctors and dentists (and beauticians and nutritionists, etc etc ;)) and should be, it is such a wealthy feeling of life when you realize you can take care of your own body and spirit :)

Hey guys!
How long do you oil pull in the morning? What's the least amount of time you feel is necessary for good results?

We do it for at least 20 minutes. That's what I have read is the minimum.
