Moving to Arizona was culture shock for me as well. I no longer had the pressure on me to have seen the latest play, read all the bestselling books and movies. But I was also surrounded by people who were offended at my once-extensive vocabulary and asked me to quit using the three dollar words. Arizona has grown alot since then. I was shocked at the ignorance about environmental issues and recycling and the young single female thing was strange to me. Behaviorally the expectations were really backwards - I was too forward - too New York. Yet the clothing for young women was very exposing - not at all conservative like the behavior they wanted. The red light districts back east were lit up yet traveling in the west was confusing to me for a minute because it was Amarillo I believe, where the sedate underlit hotels were for the protitutes trade - just the opposite of my idea!
So developmentally I have suffered for lack of input by like-minded people and after 30 years of it coming here helps me to really see it. But I consider the trade well worth it in some ways since I don't have people chastising me because I haven't read everything on the New York Time's best seller list.
