Raw Deviled Egg-less "Egg" Spread
This recipe was featured in Raw Food, Right Now!s Thanksgiving ebook and is absolutely incredible! With Heidi and Justin's kind permission, I now get to share it with you.
I swear it DOES taste exactly like the deviled eggs my mom used to make on special occasions. For a wonderful egg salad, simply fold in some finely chopped celery, green onion and red pepper.
Raw Deviled Egg-less "Egg" Spread
By Heidi and Justin of Raw Food, Right Now!
Serves 4-6
½ cup pure water (I prefer to start with less and add more water if needed)
Juice from one small lemon
1 clove garlic, peeled
1 ½ teaspoons sea salt (or to taste!!!)
1 ½ cups raw cashews
½ teaspoon dry mustard
1 Tablespoon apple cider vinegar
Turmeric, as needed for color (approx. ½ teaspoon)
1. Place the water, lemon juice, garlic, sea salt and cashews in the high speed blender, and blend until very smooth.
2. With a spatula, take the mixture from the blender and place in a medium sized mixing bowl.
3. Slowly stir in the mustard, white vinegar, and turmeric until it reaches the color and flavor you desire.
4. Serve on top of flax seed crackers, celery sticks, or add a bit of water to make a creamy salad dressing.
Shelf Life: Keeps up to 5 days in the fridge if sealed in a tight container. You can make this ahead of time!
Carmella's Notes:
- I usually make this spread using part cashews and part macs.
- For an awesome cream cheese, just omit the mustard and turmeric.

Oh boy when I first saw this recipe I had no idea what Deviled Egg was all about. I have not tasted that in my life however I took the chance in making it because I love eggs (hmmmm why do I love so many things ). And boy was I glad I made it, it tasted superb!!!
I love the creaminess of it and the yellow tinge really makes it look like boiled egg yolk that has been mashed.
Just for those who are wondering how it may turn out to be, I have Raw Deviled Egg-less "egg" Spread on my Mediterranean Almond Bread posted in that thread, or here http://www.rawfreedomcommunity.info/...read.php?t=113, see post 2.
Are you sure it lasts that long?? Mine did not make it to day 2
Thank you for bringing this up Carmella, also thank you for the cream cheese idea.
ps : how do you say it? As in Devil with an 'ed'?? or De-viled??

Hey aisah girl!
How are things in the Land of Smiles?
About how long it keeps, that was RFRN's suggestion, not mine. I've never really kept track...

Wish I could help but am not sure myself... Being the native French speaker that I am! ;-)
Mmmmmm... With all that talk of this wonderful recipe, I may just have to make it in the next few days. Eggless spread on onion bread with a slice of tomato and some homegrown sprouts... Yummo!

This is a wonderful recipe - one my husband loves, too. Ours lasts for a few days, but we eat it too quickly to know how long it could last!

Re: Eggless Deviled Eggs
Can I use ground brown mustard seeds as the mustard powder? This way I'm sure it's raw. Thanks. HarmonyHer

Hum, not sure what the difference is exactly between yellow and brown mustard seeds but you could definitely grind them up yourself in a little coffee grinder instead of the powder.
