What are you guys making for Thanksgiving?

I know our American friends are getting ready to celebrate Thanksgiving this week. Have you decided on a menu yet?

BTW, Fred Patenaude just sent his readers a free Thanksgiving menu sample. Still have to browse through it to see if anything sounds interesting...

I just went out yesterday and bought the ingredients for the Stuffing Fantasy. I want to make Jicama mashers and Ani's butternut cranberry rice to go along with it.

I have those persimmons. They may turn into a pie. I'm debating on whether I want to share any of my stuff with the SADers.

Oh yum! That sounds delish!

Technically, the Canadian Thanksgiving was last month, but I might just use the excuse to play with Holiday flavors. My menu would be very similar to yours actually, except for the addition of some mushroom gravy. I'm thinking I'd like to try a pumpkin pie too, either the one Heathy recently made or the one in Everyday Raw.

Hate to break it to you Joz, but it looks to me like you've got yourself a rooster platter (ahem, a cock platter if you please) instead of a turkey. Trust me, I've spent lots of time with each of these animals (for reals), and turkeys are much uglier than that guy on your plate.

Regardless, I love the way you plated the stuffing so it looks like a big ol' pile of veggie stuffing with a bird head!

Sounds like you had quite the feast, Jozzie! Which mashed tatoes did you make?

I made 1/2 batch of Matthew Kenneys jicama ones; and with all the other foods I did not get to savor it ;;;; but they were good enough so I'm making a batch to enjoy with less food to compete with!

...everyone else got sad mashed ones.

I mocked up analogs of mashed potatoes, stuffing and cranberry relish. The cranberries were delicious - gingery and fruity. The taters and stuffing, though, I probably could have done without. They tasted good, but were very heavy and full of nuts. I could only eat a small portion of each, along with other veggies.

Next holiday I think I'll just make something special and beautiful and raw, even if it doesn't snap into the mold of traditional holiday foods. Making analogs of Thanksgiving favorites was a fun experiment and definitely amused and impressed my non-raw friends. But I think I'd rather put my time and energy into creating a beautiful and delicious dish that showcases the natural flavors and textures of the food I'm using, instead of trying to make them into something that they are not.

On the other hand, the pecan pie I made was delicious and satisfying. It was also very filling, so only a small piece was necessary to do the job (and now I happily have half the pie stashed in my freezer for future enjoyment). I served it with homemade raw coconut-vanilla nice cream.
