I wasn't quite sure where to ask this, so I'll give it a shot here....
I bought a summer squash at the market this week...it's green and yellow & looks like a flying saucer! I asked the farmer & he said to cook it just like any other summer squash.
Well, I'm not going to cook it! What suggestions do have on how to use this lovely squash before it rots?
You can use all summer squash as you would zucchini.
It might be a fairy squash - there's a guy at my farmer's market who sells them, they're kind of round, but flat, and have points on them, heard to explain, but when you slice it, it's very fancy looking.
I would slice it and throw in some sliced onion and 1 crushed garlic and some nama shoyou and some herbs and 1 squirt of agave and juice of 1/2 lemon pinch salt...............and let it marinate for a few hours............and just eat..............yum!
Oh, the flying saucer type is a Patty Pan. I grow it in my garden, very yummy. There are tons of recipes for summer squash or zucchini in our recipe section; it all depends what kind of equipment you've got. If you have a spiral slicer, I'd say try making spaghetti with different sauces. If you have a mandoline slicer, definitely try to make lasagna. You can make a delicious soup if you have a blender. But even with a veggie peeler, you'll be able to make fettuccine-type noodles.
Have fun experimenting and please let us know what did you make!
Well, I cut it up and marinated it like wyjoz suggested. I must not have used enough marinade, because it was still quite bland. The squash was about 10" across and 5" deep.
I think I'd like to make a sauce to go over it to save it. Any suggestions?
