Yep, we've only found them frozen so far and mostly at Asian markets. Looks like it's a bit of a hit and miss thing to determine whether they're ripe - you know, being frozen an' all - but when you get a good one... Oh wow!
I think you either really really like durian or you don't care for it at all. I love love the custard-like texture! I wasn't too sure at first about the flavor, but then it started to grow on me. Now we pick up durian whenever we get the chance for a special treat.
Dodo,
I'm glad we'll be initiating you to it! It can be a little intimidating to take the jump into the durian world on one's own so it's perfect that we happen to have one just in time for our meeting. Yippee!
On the Food Network, there is a show about this guy who travels all over the world to eat strange foods... it's called "Bizarre Food" or something like that.
I don't have cable, but the episodes I've seen he goes to a penis restaurant and eats peni (plural?) from all different animals, has eaten a camel paw and all kinds of stuff. This guy refuses to eat durian! It's the only food he won't eat!
I'm thinking... hey, this guy and me may be on opposite sides of the food spectrum, so durian might be my favorite.

Hey Pansy!!! Glad to see ya around, girl!
I'm a durian-virgin so far, but not for too long... Carmi wants to have one together when they visit us- omg, it will be pretty soon!
I always had a hard time eating smelly foods, like fish and boiled eggs. I'm mortified how the durian will feel like...
Since you're going to be in the LA area, find a local Asian supermarket. One in Rosemead has fresh and frozen durian. Picked up a fresh one for about $5.99/ lb. Came out to $35.
avocadotree O.K. Now that I have lost my Durian virginity.....I can actually state! forget peni or penises or penuses!!!!
GO DURIAN ALL THE WAY!
I waited for Carmi/Donni to dig in and actually 'EAT THIS STUFF'' before I even thought of getting a bite..... SO I smelled it and it was not bad....really..... from all the descritptions I expected 'rotten eggs' not that bad.....
so Mosaica! my dear! enjoy it ....no better 'teachers' to do it with !!! I told Carmi/Don that I would never have gotten one by myself..........so it was nice to experience it with them.
